I cleaned off my dining room table today and suddenly felt like I had my shit together.
I didn’t, of course. But looking at that clear space where clutter had just been had an unusually calming effect on me. It was almost as if the table was cheering me on. “See? You got this,” it seemed to say to me with the light reflecting off its shiny cherry finish.
As I sat in the chair facing the open space where school supplies and papers had been piled, I could breathe a little deeper. It was a small space where I could look to and physically avoid the hecticness that is adulting and parenthood.
And I liked it.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that this revelation will instantly turn me into a super-organized person. And I’m not saying your house needs to be neat for you to be happy.
Nope. Nope. Nope-ity nope.
I am a messy (ish) person in general, and I’m ok with that most of the time. There is a method to my madness, and the moment you try to organize me is the moment I won’t be able to find anything I’m looking for.
But today, this quiet, empty space felt good. It grounded me and reenergized me and gave me a little boost. All from clearing a dang table. Who knew?
So, my friends, my point is that sometimes we all need a little escape from the clutter – of life, of our minds, of our physical space – to feel just a little bit better. However that may look for you.
For me, I’ll just be over here for a few more minutes enjoying my clear mind at my clear dining room table feeling pretty together.
And I will definitely make sure not to glance over three feet to my left at my disastrous kitchen counter.
